PHS/EHD has the following comments for your ,
consideration.
Six soil borings were proposed to;be located in the area of the former underground storage
tanks containing gasoline and diesel. The borings are to be augered to groundwater,
currently encountered at approximately 7 feet below ground surface. Soil samples will be s
collected at three feet and at the capillary 'fringe, just above groundwater. Once
groundwater is encountered a casing will be placed within the borehole for several hours to
allow stabilization prior to collecting a groundwater grab sample.
The proposal indicated that contamination levels encountered in soil borings SB1 SB4(July
1991) were below those of concern to PHS/EHD. PHS/EHD considers the contamination
evidenced in these soil borings to be significant. !Soil contamination encountered in SB1 at
9 feet evidenced 74 ppm TPH-diesel; 5,100 ppm TPH-gas; 2,000 ppb benzene;;1,400 ppb
toluene; 20,000 ppb ethylbenzene; and 33,000 ppb xylene. Soil contamination encountered
in SB2 at 9 feet evidenced 6 ppm TPH-diesel; 34 ppm oil and grease; 220 ppm TPH-gas;
150 ppb benzene; 620 ppb toluene; 2,400 ethylbenzene; and 1,400 ppb xylene. Soil
contamination encountered in SB4 at 9 feet evidenced 66 ppm oil and grease; 3.6`ppm TPH-
gas; 15 ppb ethylbenzene; and 35 ppb xylene.
Furthermore, soil contamination;,was evidenced (July 1991) during the installation of MW1
at 9 feet and MW3 at 5 feet. Soil contamination was also evidenced (July 1989) by soil
borings B1 and B4. These borings were also hand augered around the area of the former
gasoline underground storage tanks. Soil conta `urination was also evidenced (July 1990) by
soil sample SS10 at 2 feet.
A Division of San Joaquin County Hearth Care Services
