HEALTH AND SAFETY PROCEDURES FOR SAMPLING, THE INSTALLATION
OF SOIL BORINGS, VAPOR EXTRACTION AND GROUNDWATER
MONITORING WELLS, AND EX-SITU BIOREMEDIATON OF SOIL
The following health and safety procedures have been
developed for personnel participating in site investi-
gations that may involve exposure to fuel hydrocarbon
contaminated soil and/or groundwater. While the referenced
protocol is considered generally appropriate, modifications
may be made by qualified service providers and/or
regulatory agency representatives in response to site
specific conditions .
PRI14ARY HEALTH AND SAFETY STAFF
John Rapp, Registered Environmental Health Specialist
Day Telephone: (209) 538-3768
Ater Hours : (209) 551-3591
Ozdemir Beyce, Ph.D.
Day Telephone: (209) 538-3768
After Hours : ( 415) 325-0311
Richard Jacobs, Ph.D.
Day Telephone: ( 209) 538 -3768
Ater Hours : ( 209) 523.7210
PUBLIC HEALTH/ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD ASSESSMENT
Hazards associated with the performance of tasks related to
the above referenced assessment and remedial activities
are: 1) Direct exposure to hydrocarbon contaminated soil ,
2) The potential for ignition of flammable-explosive
vapors , and 3) Physical hazards associated with working
near heavy equipment .
HAZARDS OF CHEMICAL EXPOSURE
A portion of the soil in the area of investigation may be
contaminated with gasoline and/or diesel fuel . The most
toxic constituents present in these compounds are believed
to be their aromatic constituents- benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) ; with benzene the most
toxic of these having been identified as a carcinogen that
forms as much as 3 . 5% of gasoline by weight .
Due to the volatile nature of aromatic compounds, the most
significant route of potential exposure would likely be via
