L
SIDE VIEW OF BIO-TREATMENT BED PROPOSED FOR 2360 EAST ST. , TRACY
IT
z CIT
E
D
A B C
Scale: 1 inch = 10 feet
LEGEND:
A. . . Contaminated Soil
B. . . 0.020-inch slot, 2-inch diameter PVC piping connected to
a vacuum pump by 2-inch diameter solid PVC for the
purpose of drawing ambient air into the treatment bed
in order to maintain aerobic conditions
C. . . 6 mil polyethylene liner overlaying 8-inch high soil
berm
D. . . 2-inch diameter solid PVC piping connecting well screen
placed into the soil to a 50 scfm vacuum pump
E. . . 3/4 to 1 -inch diameter PVC sprinkler system piping
TREATMENT BED CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION:
After moving the soil on site, it will be mixed with spent
mushroom compost at a ratio of 3 parts soil to 1 part compost.
The compost is added to the soil as a bulking agent and to serve
as a moisture and nutrient reservoir. The soil-compost mixture
will then be configured into a quadrilateral bed atop a bermed,
polyethylene liner. PVC piping will be used to construct both
the sprinkler and aeration systems so that adequate amounts
of water and air can be delivered to the aerobic bacteria that
will degrade the hydrocarbon contaminants. A poly liner will
be placed over the bed to control bed temperature and dust.
The beds will be monitored weekly during which time the sprinkler
and aeration systems will be inspected and readings taken to
determine levels of soil moisture and nutrients. The rate of
contaminant degradation will be tracked using both certified
and uncertified analyses. EPM expects to acquire final samples
for certified analysis to confirm the success of the treatment
process no more than 45 days after beginning treatment.
A.
