This report was
submitted as a requirement of Title 27 California Code of Regulations Section 20415 and to comply
with Reporting Requirement E.2.Task f(ii) of Waste Discharge Requirements Order No. R5-2004-0157.
The Discharger proposes to drill three 50-foot borings, and two 100-foot borings using a hollow stem
auger. In addition, three borings will be advanced to at least 50-feet using CPT. The data from these
borings will be used to evaluate the impacts of salt in the vadose zone directly beneath the ponds, and to
establish the geotechnical properties of the soils within the existing ponds and beneath the
impoundments. Staff expects that this data will be presented in the forthcoming closure plan. Any
modifications from this plan must be submitted in writing for concurrence. Prior to completing the
investigation, the Discharger must abandon all boreholes in compliance with all applicable regulations.
Staff concurs with the presented strategy, and expects the discharger to proceed immediately with the
investieation.
The Regional Board looks forward to working with SMS Briners on their compliance issues. If you
have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me at 1-916-464-4679.
'%4colozsi
HOWARD F.
