(Golder)has been retained by SMS Briners to assist in evaluating the vadose
zone underlying the facility's evaporation ponds. The evaluation will assist in weighing alternatives
for closing the impoundments as required by the Waste Discharge Requirements for Closure, Post
Closure and Corrective Action of Surface Impoundments at Kruger Foods, Inc. — SMS Briners
Vegetable Brining Facility, San Joaquin County (tentative order) dated July 15, 2004, Golder's
evaluation will supplement current work being conducted by Luhdorff and Scalmanini, Consulting
Engineers (LSCE) for characterizing the extent of chloride-impacted groundwater related to site
closure,as described in their Revised Work Plan dated September 20,2004.
LSCE's Revised Work Plan includes a characterization of the lateral and vertical extent of chloride-
impacted groundwater using cone penetration testing(CPT). Golder is proposing to advance three(3)
additional CPT soundings, along with five (5) hollow-stem-auger (HSA) borings, to characterize
chloride concentrations and geotechnical properties in the vadose zone underlying and surrounding
the ponds.
Golder's proposed scope of work and schedule are provided herein.
PROPOSED SCOPE OF WORK
General
The proposed scope of work for the field exploration and laboratory testing program was developed
to accomplish the two following goals:
• Assess salt concentrations in existing soils at the base of the stabilization ponds to identify
impacted soils and to aid in final closure design;and,
• Estimate relevant geotechnical properties of soils within the existing berms and below the
ponds to assist in final design.
This work will include pre-field activities, drilling, sample collection, chemical and geotechnical
laboratory analysis, and reporting. This scope of work consists of sample collection for
OFFICES ACROSS ASIA, AUSTRALASIA, EUROPE,NORTH AMERICA,SOUTH AMERICA
