... .0
IV. Waste Discharge Monitoring and Facility Compliance
Planned Soil Borings— South Pond
Two soil borings are planned for construction in the south evaporation pond. Although, these
were planned for construction in August 2002, complications with the construction of two new
water supply wells occurred, and timing and weather problems then resulted for proceeding with
the borings within the south pond. Construction of the soil borings is now planned to occur in
summer 2003 when the south pond is sufficiently dry to be accessible. The planned locations of
the borings are shown on Figure 43.
The two soil borings will be constructed using auger drilling methods. The borings will extend
from the base of the south pond to a depth of about 110 to 120 feet, or a depth consistent with
near the top of the water table. Samples will be collected at approximately 10-foot intervals
(with more frequent sampling within the uppermost 10-foot interval). The soil borings will be
properly destroyed at the conclusion of the sampling activities. Sealing of the borings will be
done using a tremie pipe to place cement grout to total depth of the boring.
The soil samples collected from the two boring sites will be analyzed for total salts and also for
chloride. The soil chemical results will be used to develop a vertical profile of salt distribution
beneath the south pond. The lithologic data, complemented with other site boring log and
geophysical log data, will be used to design an additional extraction well located on the south
side of the south pond. The subsurface salt profile and estimated precipitation (and other future
storm water volumes) will also be used to evaluate alternatives for further remedial activities and
the duration of remedial infiltration/leaching activities prior to implementing pond closure.
Other Improvements
SMS Briners plans to replace 20 more wooden tanks during 2003 with fiberglass tanks. During
the next five years (including 2003), SMS plans to replace all wooden tanks with fiberglass
tanks.
SMS has also modified the lines plumbed to each brining tank row to allow flexibility for
directing brine, recycled brine, air, and water as needed to any tank row and/or to storage
(brine/recycled brine).
©LU HOORFF 6 SCALMANINI 21
CONSULTING ENGINEERS
