This site, as previously stated in several reports (including the Corrective
Action Program; LSCE, September 1992), is 7-1/2 miles east of Stockton, California on
Highway 4 in San Joaquin County. We plan to remove the existing 2-inch steel monitoring
welt and replace it with a 6-inch PVC monitoring well. Profiles of the existing monitoring
well and the proposed replacement monitoring well are attached The new monitoring well
will be constructed in the same borehole created by removal of the original monitoring well.
The new monitoring well will allow SMS Briners to install sampling equipment in this well
similar to the equipment installed in other monitoring wells at the facility. The new PVC
monitoring well will be less affected by seasonally high chloride concentrations which have
been corrosive to the existing steel casing. The new monitoring well will also have a shorter
gravel envelope.
We are prepared to start work on this project, and the drilling contractor, Purviance
Drillers, is currently attempting to take out a permit from the San Joaquin County
Department of Environmental Health Services. The County has requested that you review
the work description stated above and that we obtain your approval for this work before
500 First Street. Woodland.
