EPA supports the application of a risk-based approach for determining the extent and urgency <br /> of cleanup for all LUST cases including those where only soil has been affected. <br /> Recommendation 4: Modify the LUST regulatory framework to allow the consideration <br /> of risk-based cleanup goals higher than MCLi <br /> Maximum contaminant levels (MCLS) are established to prevent human health risks for public <br /> drinking water supplies. In cases where there is no plan for current or future use of ground <br /> water for human consumption, alternate cleanup levels may be appropriate on a case-by-case <br /> basis. Again, this determination should be a risk-based decision which ensures the protection <br /> of human health, safety, or the environment. <br /> Recommendation S Identify a series of LUST demonstration sites and form a pilot <br /> LUST closure committee <br /> EPA supports.the establishment of demonstration projects to test new risk based corrective <br /> action alternatives.
