Berry, Ph.D.. aa)
Staff Toxicologist
Human and Ecological Risk Division (HERD)
DATE: November 9, 1999
SUBJECT:
PCA: 12020 Site: 101220
Background
This report details the field activities and a"screening health risk assessment"for a property
located in San Joaquin County, near the City of Tracy. Chevron's former Old Valley Pipeline was
located in a right-of-way along the southern edge of the site adjacent to the Southern Pacific rail-
road alignment. The former pipeline transported heavy petroleum products (crude and fuel oil)
from Bakersfield to Richmond, California, from the early 1900s to the 1950s. The site is adjacent to
another site where known petroleum hydrocarbon releases occurred. This investigation was de-
signed to assess the lateral and vertical extent of petroleum hydrocarbon-affected soil along the
historic right-of-way, to evaluate groundwater quality, and to evaluate human health risks posed by
the residual petroleum hydrocarbons in the soil.
Field activities included the advancement of 16 soil borings and the collection of soil and grab
groundwater samples from selected borings. Environmental samples were analyzed for TPH gas,
TPH diesel, TPH crude using USEPA Method 8015, BTEX using USEPA Method 8021 B, and
PAHs using USEPA Method 8270 SIM.
Document Reviewed
We reviewed"Soil and Groundwater Investigation and Screening Health Risk Assessment
of the Old Valley Pipeline Right-of-Way" Mansfield Property (APN 209-270-30), Tracy, California.
This document, dated September 1999, was prepared by Geomatrix Consultants, 2101 Webster
Street, 12"' Floor, Oakland, California 94612, contractors to Chevron Environmental Management
Company.
