• i
June 28, 1988 Harding Lawson Associates
Phi 17060,008.03
Mr. Hal Miller
The Southland Company
Page 5
Monitoring wells (MW) 9 and 10 are intended to check for
free product in the water and soil. Since light hydrocar-
bons will primarily be transported along the water surface
or within the capillary fringe, these wells will not need to
be more than a few feet below the water surface. Data col-
lected to date indicates that the water surface is between
three and five feet below grade. It is therefore expected
that a eight foot well with five feet of screen will be suf
e ficient to allow monitoring of the water surface. Depending '
on the limits of the free product plume and the subsurface ,
conditions encountered, these monitoring wells may eventu
°ally be used as extraction wells in part of a remedial
design.
MW-ll through 15 are primarily .being installed as checks for
k hydrocarbon contaminantsin the water. Since it is antici-
pated.that 'these wells may be left in place and may poten-
tially be incorporated into a remedial program, the total
depth of these wells will be between 15 and 20 feet. This
greater- depth is recommended to allow for
."fluctuations. ground water
Boring P-8 will not be completed as a well. This probe will
be -used.-to- collect soil samples to assist in defining the
limits of free product and the presence of P gasoline .con-
..-stituents in the soils. The total depth of this probe will
he approximately five feet, just deep enough to intersect
R the capillary fringe and water table. Upon completion of
sample collection from this location, the hole will be
} grouted full depth with a cement bentonite slurry. All soil
and ground water samples will be analyzed for TPH as gaso
line .BTXE.
Both the boring and monitoring wells will be drilled and in-
stalled as described in the Appendix to the proposal of
April 29, 2988. Upon completion of this segment of work,
-- - - -- all collected data will be evaluated and-a feasibility study ---
initiated is accordance with HLA's April 29, 1988 proposal.
All results and recommendations will be included in a formal
report issued at the conclusions of the Phase Ip investiga
tion. .
,t _
F
r
