Design Alternatives
' Several design alternatives were considered for implementing
groundwater extraction and treatment, if deemed necessary.
' Relatively large quantities of groundwater are anticipated so
that off haul and disposal of the extracted groundwater is not
deemed feasible. After discussions with the City of Tracy Water
' Treatment Plant, discharge of treated groundwater to the sanitary
sewer system is not likely as the system is at full hydraulic
' capacity and new hook-ups are not being allowed for treated
groundwater. Therefore, we have assumed that discharge of
groundwater will occur to the storm drain under a Natural
Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit issued by
the CVRWQCB. A twelve inch storm drain line is located under
' Grant Line Road and extensive excavation will be required for
connection. There are no storm drain lines beneath Buthmann
Avenue. The following four methods were evaluated for treatment
' of extracted groundwater at the site prior to discharge:
• GAC media,
' a Air stripping,
• Biological degradation, and
• Catalytic oxidation, usingperoxide and
P ultraviolet
light.
' 17
