Chromium
Page 2 of 2 1
Additional Considerations
j There are currently no laboratories in California certified to perform analysis for chromium VI in
,T drinking water. DHS is in the process of certifying these labs.
I
Some published studies and recent sampling of Southern California water systems suggest that
certain plumbing alloys and faucets may Ieach trace levels of chromium into drinking water
supplies. I
G
Water Community Actions
The water community has begun sampling for the presence of chromium VI in drinking water and
reporting results to local and state officials. Once the Department of Health Services places
chromium VI on the Unregulated Contaminant list, all vulnerable water systems will be required to
begin this sampling.
The concern over leaching faucets and fixtures needs to be resolved as soon as possible. The water
community is actively researching and performing sampling to determine if in fact traces of
chromium in drinking water could be the result of leaching plumbing. The water community plans
to work cooperatively with the Department of Health Services in determining if a drinking water
standard for chromium VI is needed, and at what level the standard should be set.
ACWA's Position
ACWA supports the Department of Health Services'process for establishing safe drinking water
regulations. ACWA members are already collecting sampling data on chromium, and will continue
to provide the information needed by DHS. If and when the department determines that a standard
is needed, ACWA and its members will work with DHS to ensure that the adopted rule is.
of public health and based on the best available science.
More information on chromium can be obtained from OEHHA and DHS. j
ACWA Contact: Krista Clark, Regulatory Affairs Specialist, 916.441.4545 Ik
BACK TO CALIFORNIA WATER FACTS
4
For more water information, visit our Helpfiil Water Links
FeedBack I ACWA I Headlines ACWA Events I Legislation I Regulatory I ACWA-USA I Research
California Water Facts i Helpful Water Links Classifieds I Benefits I ACWA JPIA I Members Only
ACWA Forum I Search
2000 Association of California Water Agencies
i
I -
http://www.acwanet.com/waterfacts/chromium.html 11/22/00
