Five of the wells were installed to a total depth of 17 feet below
surface grade(bsg)to investigate the lateral extent of the shallow groundwater contamination; one
well was installed with a conductor casing set to 32 feet bsg and a short discrete screen interval set
from 46-51 feet bsg to investigate the vertical extent of the contamination. Soil samples for analysis
were collected during the drilling of the borings for the wells;the wells were developed and sampled
on October 24, 2003,without notification to SJCIEHD.
Analytical results from the soil and groundwater samples collected during this investigation indicate
that the lateral and vertical extent of both the soil and groundwater contamination has not been
defined. The extremely high concentration of methyl tertiary butyl ether in shallow down-gradient well
MW-5 should be addressed with interim remediation.
The report did not include a Site Conceptual Model (SCM), or recommendations for further work.
Please submit a work plan to continue the investigation of the lateral and vertical extent of the
contamination at this site. In addition, submit a work plan for interim remediation to minimize migration
of contamination offsite. The report states"future remediation lines, which consist of two 2-inch
diameter and one 1-inch diameter PVC lines, were stubbed up in the well box for TP-1. The
remediation piping was installed along the west side of the UST's, extending approximately 90 feet
south of TP-1 and stubbed up adjacent to the airlwater service area." Please explain what the exact
purpose of these lines is,and what types of remediation are they are intended to perform.
The work plans and SCM are due for submittal no later than February 27, 2004.
