Working To Restore Nature
7.0 REMEDIATION ALTERNATIVES
In accordance with PHS/EHD's guidelines, RESNA has considered at least two remediation
' alternatives, which are discussed below. The following general response alternatives for the site
have been considered:
' O Alternative 1 - Passive Remediation
O Alternative 2 - Soil Vapor Extraction with Groundwater Extraction
' O Alternative 3 - Groundwater Extraction and Passive Soil Remediation
' 7.1 Alternative 1 - Passive Remediation
This alternative would involve no active remediation Naturally occurring microbes which
' degrade petroleum hydrocarbon constituents over time would be utilized to gradually reduce
residual hydrocarbons in the soil and groundwater. Groundwater contaminants would be
' monitored on a regular basis via the existing site wells to monitor the migration of contaminants
Nfmimal capital outlay would be required for this option to be put into action.
' 7.2 Alternative 2 - Soil Vapor Extraction with Groundwater Extraction
This alternative involves remediation of impacted soils by vapor extraction with remediation of
' groundwater by extraction and subsequent treatment Initiation of these systems would include
the following activities: preparing plans and specifications, obtaining necessary permits; and
' installing the vapor and groundwater extraction piping, treatment compound(s), and treatment
device(s) (catalytic oxidizer and/or granular activated carbon). The extraction system(s) would
be monitored at least monthly or at the frequency specified by the appropriate permits.
Groundwater monitoring would continue on a regular basis until project completion.
1
Vapor extraction with air sparging was dismissed as a potential remedial alternative because of
site soil characteristics. Air sparging injects pressurized air into the groundwater via a well or
wells that are screened below the water table As the air nses through the aquifer it volatilizes
' dissolved petroleum hydrocarbons and residual phase hydrocarbons adsorbed in the soil below
the water table and transfers them to the gaseous phase The process gas nses to the unsaturated
1500 8MTOMXC"-07%DRF 16
