Working To Restore Nature
8 Regulatory and community acceptance
' $ AIternative 1 - Passive Remediation
O Criterion 1
' The passive remediation alternative has no immediate health based risks. The
impacted media exists at depths greater than 35 feet so the possibility for exposure
' to humans by volatilization, dust or dermal contact with impacted soil is minimal,
with little or no fire or explosion hazard This shallow aquifer is currently classified
as a drinking water source but is not generally used as such.
' O Criterion 2
This alternative would reduce the existing levels and volume of impacted soil and
' groundwater over time by natural degradation, but the rate of reduction is not
known The possibility of migration of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil caused by
surface water flushing contaminants into the groundwater exists in the short term
unless an asphalt cap is installed across the site surface
o Criterion 3:
' This alternative would not immediately remediate soil or groundwater to levels
acceptable to regulatory agencies.
O Criterion 4:
' This alternative would entail minimal cost associated with periodic monitoring.
Additional measures may be required if subsurface contaminants migrate offsite or
if regulatory agencies find this alternative unacceptable
' o Criterion 5:
' This alternative is effective in minimizing the health-based risks in the short term.
Exposure to humans by contamination releases to the air due to dust, or through
150MSUU3OMXCAP-0794 DRF 18
1
