Please refer to Appendix C for more information on ticks and tick-borne diseases.
Poison ivy may also be present during the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Contact with it
Lr
should be avoided, however, if one has come in contact with it, the affected skin area should
be washed thoroughly with soap and cool water. Care should be taken when handling clothing
or any other items that have come in contact with poison ivy. If an allergic reaction occurs, a
physician's advice should be sought.
Yellow jackets may be encountered nesting on or below the ground surface around areas of
y thick vegetation. Other bees may also be encountered in trees. Care should be taken when
entering these areas for the first time. If an allergic reaction occurs, a physician's advice should
be sought. Personnel with known allergic reactions to bee stings should carry appropriate
medication.
5.3 PHYSICAL HAZARDS
y
5.3.1 Noise Exposure
Field activities may be conducted at sites with high noise levels from heavy equipment.
Regulations require that hearing protection be used when noise levels exceed 90 dBA averaged
r over an 8-hour day. Hearing protection is required at this site for exposures of greater than 90
dBA for any length of time. In the absence of instrumentation, an appropriate rule of thumb is
y that when normal conversation is difficult at a distance of two to three feet, hearing protection
is required. W-C personnel and their subcontractors shall have hearing protection on site for
use by their employees.
5.3.2 Thermal Stress
y
Environmental conditions may present additional health concerns due to temperature extremes.
Effects and treatment of heat and cold stress can be found in Appendix C .
y
