Continental
Grain recently received a document dated May 21,1999 entitled "San Joaquin County
Notification of Hazardous Waste Discharge, Health& Safety Code 25180.70." A copy of the
document is attached for your reference. The purpose of this letter is to correct
inaccuracies contained in this notification document.
We believe that this noWwation document was provided as a result of our letter of May 13,
1999 to San Joaquin County Environmental Health Division, the Central Valley Regional
Water Quality Control Board and Department of Toxic Substances Control providing
data collected form an on-site water supply well, a holding tank connected to the water
supply well and form soil and groundwater samples collected at the Site. A copy of the
Lotter is also enclosed for your reference. The County's notification document inaccurately
describes the water supply well from which these samples were taken as a `drinking well"
and as a "domestic well." To the best of our knowledge, the waterf-om this well was not
used for drinking or domestic purposes. The Company has provided bottled water at the
site for drinking purposes since the mid 1970's. When the well was in use, water from it
was used in sinks and toilets in three bathrooms at the Site and was used periodically for
general maintenance purposes at the site. Use of the well was discontinued on May 10,1999.
The company is currently in the process of obtaining municipal water from the City of
Stockton to supply the Site with water. In the interim portable bathroom facilities for
employees'use are provided.
The County's notification document also states that analytical results taken from the
water supply well and holding tank show levels of carbon tetrachloride at 2.30 ug/L and
290 ug/L, respectively. As explained in our letter of May 13,1999. samples taken from the
