• A well reference measuring point will be placed on the north side of the monitoring
well casing. The location and elevation of the top of casing at the reference point
of the newly installed well and existing well will be surveyed relative to mean sea
level by a licensed surveyor to second order accuracy.
• The water level and depth to the bottom of the well will be measured to the nearest
0.01-foot using an electronic water level indicator. The presence of free-phase
petroleum product will be assessed.
Well Development Procedures
• Well development will be conducted by initially surging the well with a surge
block, followed by removal of water with a pump and/or bailer. Surging will be
conducted over 5-foot intervals of the screened well casing, beginning at the
bottom of the well. Surging should be conducted at least twice over the entire
length of the well screen. Well development activities will be recorded on well
development forms.
• A minimum of five well casing volumes of water will be removed from the well
during development. The temperature, conductivity, and pH of the groundwater
removed during development of the well will be monitored. Development should
continue until the measured groundwater parameters have stabilized and the
turbidity of the water removed has decreased to a degree as judged acceptable.
• Water removed from the well will be contained in 55-gallon United Nations
approved drums. Labels will be placed on the drums with the contents, date, well
number, and job number recorded on the label. The drums will be stored at the site
pending laboratory analysis of the groundwater.
Groundwater Sampling Procedures
• Field activities and equipment utilization will be recorded on field report forms.
• A disposable polyethylene or stainless steel bottom valve bailer will be used for
collection of each groundwater sample. Polyethylene bailers will be discarded after
each sample is collected. Stainless steel bailers will be washed between wells
using a bristle brush with a detergent rinse followed by two clear water rinses, and
a final deionized/distilled water rinse. The bailers will be air dried or dried using
paper towels.
• New nylon rope will be used to lower the bailers into the wells. The nylon rope
will be discarded after each well.
• Groundwater samples will be placed into laboratory-supplied containers containing
preservatives.
• Groundwater will be discharged from the bailer via a bottom-emptying device.
Discharge to the containers should be conducted in a manner to minimize bubbling
NAsacDP\2001\PRJ\PJ8\8800401 A.1 ac.doc B-3
12/12/01
