TECHNICAL APPROACH
3. 1 TASK I - INITIAL FIELD TESTS AND SYSTEMS DESIGN
The soil vapor petroleum hydrocarbon conc©ntratlonn from the coil
vapnr extraction wells and the soil vapor transmiaaivity wore
testae! on 24 April 1969, as discussed above in Chapter 1 . The
VETS unit installation outlined in this proposal is based on that
initial field toot.
3.2 TASK II - VETS PERMITTING AND INSTALLATION
The five onsito vapor extraction wells V1 , V2, V3, V4, and V5
will be plumbed to a central point in the approximate center of
the 5 wells, using 2-inch diameter PVC pipe (Figure 3). The five
w wells will be manifolded to a Haastecr Mult1mode combustor unit
consisting of ( 1 ) a 100-cfm vacuum compzossor unit (CU) which
induces the air flow through the eontaminat,ld soil via the vapor
extraction wells, (2) a vapor control procaaror (VCP), an incin-
erator in which the extracted hydrocarbon vapors are burned abovo
gaa jets, and (3) a catalytic reactor (CAR) where the remaining
lov-concentration hydrocarbon vapors are catalyzed to purity with
essential'v 99.9 percent efficiency. The Hasstech Hultimode
combustor specifications and description are included as Appendix
8,
The CU, VCP, and CAR units will be mounted on a 6-foot by 15-fact
concrete slab located as shown in Figure 4. Power will be
brought onsite from existing utility linen and run Underground to
the VETS.
The flow line from each vapor extraction wgll will contain a
shut-off valve to restrict or completely shut off vapor flow, a
vacuum gauge to measure in-line flow vacuum, a flow meter to
_.__...
sure-the_amount-of.-vapor---f;loving-through-the s tats,--and-a ----- -- ------
aample port for collection of vapor samples. This system
configuration is shown in Figure 5.
c$2/91918/text 5
