March 29, 2019
FOR: San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department(EHD)
1868 Hazelton Ave.
Stockton,CA 95205
RECEIVED
PROJECT: Seth Heatwole Project
SR0080225 APR 0 1 2019
12927 West Ripon Road
Ripon, California 95366 ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
PERMIT/SERVICES
SUBJECT: Soil Suitability/Nitrate Loading Studies Report Addendum
The EHD has questions on the Nitrate Loading/Soil Suitability Studies I conducted for the above
referenced project. Each answer corresponds with the list referenced in an email on March 25,
2019, 3:54:55PM by Mr. Jeffrey Wong, REHS of EHD.
1. The first question is the source of the scientific evidence that by adding organic mater
(sawdust) in the soil-effluent interface "nitrification will only occur if the C:N ratio is below
20:1." The scientific evidence for this biological function can be readily obtained by a simple
Google search, and is overtly referenced in the San Joaquin County Onsite Wastewater
Treatment Systems Standards in Section 7.1: "Alternative treatment systems are standard systems
with additional enhancements above the required minimum to augment the treatment capabilities
of the system. For example, additional septic tank capacity, additional length of leachline, or the
addition of organic material under the leachline." "Engineered systems are non-standard
systems uniquely designed for a specific location or locations by a Registered Civil Engineer
based upon site specific information."
There are several scientific papers on this process from respected scientific Journals and Books;
as examples:
Effect of C/N Ratio on the Removal of Nitrogen and Microbial Characteristics in the Water
Saturated Denitrifying Section of a Two-Stage Constructed Rapid Infiltration System
Qinglin Fang,I Wenlai Xu,1,2,3,* Gonghan Xia,2 and Zhicheng Pan3, International Journal of
Research and Public Health. 2018 Jul; 15(7): 1469.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6069465/
From one of the most respected soil science books:
The Nature and Properties of Soils, 13`h Ed., Brady and Weil. pp 506-511.
Page 1 of 3
✓.C.13ax 3794 ♦ gat&&,ea 95381 t (20)4C2-1652 f ddcFie6neygch v P,%Aet
