Barbonio
Chevron Chemical Company
6001 Bollinger Canyon Road
San Ramon, CA 94583
MONITORING AND REPORTING PROGRAM NO. 5-01-825, REVIEW OF
REPORTS, KOPPEL STOCKTON TERMINAL,SANJOAQUIN COUNTY
On 5 May 2000 we sent you a draft Monitoring and Reporting Program (MRP) for the
Koppel Stockton Terminal. Subsequent discussions with your consultant, Mr. Gerald
Vogt of CH2M Hill, showed that the listed detection limit for ammonium, 0.05 mg/l, is in
error and should be 0.5 mg/l. In addition, two more piezometers were installed in March
2000 (TG-4 and TG-5), and should be included in the MRP. These corrections are
incorporated into the final MRP No. 5-01-825 which is enclosed. According to the MRP,
the next monitoring event will take place in the third quarter 2001 with the associated
report due 1 November 2001.
We received the following reports prepared by CH2M Hill:
• April 2000 First Quarter 2000 Groundwater Monitoring Report
• October 2000 Semi-Annual Groundwater Monitoring Report
• April 2001 2000 Annual and Semi-Annual Groundwater Monitoring Report
In these reports, CH2M Hill provides an excellent presentation of the monitoring data, and
the annual report includes a summary of the remediation activities. The pilot
phytoremediation plot was planted in 1998, followed by site-wide planting in 2000. The
annual report clearly shows strong declining trends in nitrate and ammonium.
concentrations in groundwater proximate to the planted areas.
CH2M Hill resurveyed the well head elevations in July 2000, which is presented in the
October 2000 report. The new elevations vary from the previous elevations by 1.8 to 2.6
feet. While this slightly changed the shape of the shallow groundwater contours, the
general gradient and direction did not appreciably change. hi the deeper aquifer, the
gradient direction shifts a few degrees further eastward.
California Environmental Protection Agency
ec1 Recycled Paper
The energy challenge facing California is real. Every Californian needs to take immediate action to reduce energy consumption.
