The reason for the collection was to answer the
questions of(a) whether there is any need to field filter the samples, and (b) whether any ammonia is
volatilzed when using a pump, instead of a bailer, to collect the samples.
As shown in the enclosed memorandum and laboratory report, there was no significant difference in the
concentrations of nitrate, ammonia, or TDS between samples that were field filtered and samples that
were not field filtered. Therefore, there will be no need to field filter groundwater samples collected
during future quarterly monitoring events. In addition, you may continue to use a submersible pump to
both purge the well and collect the water sample.
If you have any questions, I can be reached at(916) 255-3080.
WV1/3
WENDY WYELS
Site Cleanup Unit
Enclosure
cc w/enc.: Mr. Daniel Munzer, Munco,Inc., Long Beach
Ms. Marian Barbonio, Chevron Chemical Company, San Ramon
Mr. Sheldon Nelson, Chevron Research and Technology, Richmond
Dr. Kirk O'Reilly, Chevron Research and Technology, Richmond
Mr. Gerald Vogt, CH2M Hill, Redding
` cc: Mr. Mike Infuma, San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department, Stockton
Ms. Karen Baril, Cargill,Inc., Minneapolis, Minnesota
Mr. Brian Roberts, Chevron Corporation, San Francisco
Mr. Steve Larson, Cargill, Minneapolis, Minnesota
Mr. Burnie Wilhiem, Cargill Fertilizer, Florida
Mr. Anthony Ciasulli, Morgan,Lewis & Brockis,Los Angeles
Mr. Ken Laconde, SCS Engineers, Long Beach
California Environmental Protection Agency
a Recycled Paper
