1 <br /> • Some sampling activities require use of special sampling equipment <br /> Persons using this equipment should be trained prior to performing <br /> sampling <br /> • There is a concern of punctures and cuts Special protective equipment <br /> will be required <br /> 1 • Heat stress is a hazard, especially where PPE is required Use work-rest <br /> regimens and maintain hydration <br /> 8.0 LEVEL OF PROTECTION <br /> 1 Staff members and contractors of Avalon responsible for the project have completed <br /> a 40-hour health and safety training course fulfilling initial instruction requirements <br /> specified in 29 CFR 1910 120(e)(2) <br /> An Organic Vapor Analyzer (OVA) flame ionization detector or an Hnu <br /> 1 photoionization detector (PID) or equivalent with a 11 7 eV probe will be used to <br /> establish background conditions each day before operations begin Readings will be <br /> taken upwind and downwind from work areas to determine background levels of <br /> volatile compounds in the air Organic vapor levels will be monitored in the breathing <br /> space in the work area with the PID to measure the vapor levels in the breathing zone <br /> . of onsite personnel. Breathing zone PID readings will be used to establish the level of <br /> personal protective equipment (PPE) to be used Site work will be initiated in Level D <br /> protection A PID with an 11 7 eV lamp, or equivalent, will be used to monitor vapors <br /> in the breathing zone Positive breathing zone readings are not expected, but if <br /> sustained readings of 25 ppm above background levels are obtained, work should <br /> cease until engineering controls are instituted to prevent vapors from reaching the <br /> breathing zone The level of 25 ppm represents the most conservative exposure limit <br /> for volatile organic compounds found on the site (Table 1) This can be accomplished <br /> by increasing air speed (mechanical fans), improving ventilation, or changing work <br /> activities (move personnel farther away) If engineering controls cannot reduce <br /> i breathing zone readings to below 25 ppm above background, the level of protection <br /> will be upgraded to modified Level C <br /> Respirators used for Level C will be required to have both dust/mist filter and an <br /> organic vapor filter. <br /> The analytical laboratory will be one accredited by the American Industrial Hygiene <br /> Association The results of the personal air monitoring for lead and PCBs will dictate <br /> what type of respirator is appropriate A quarter or half-face air purifying respirator can <br /> be used for airborne lead concentrations below 0.5 mg/ml A full-face respirator can <br /> be used for airborne lead levels not exceeding 2.5 mg/m3 will require an upgrade to <br /> Avalon Environmental Consultants 9627-001-7 <br /> Kashmar Singh foes Truck Plaza <br /> February 1, 2002 11 Lathrop, California <br />
