San Joaquin County Public Ffealth Services
December 30, 1997
Page 2
will be necessary. The lack of these prophylactic appurtenances, coupled with higher MTBE
concentrations in gasoline sold since 1995.,likely explains the increasing MTBE.
concentrations detected at this site.
The enclosed report shows that an aromatic petroleum hydrocarbons were detected in
samples obtained from two of the six `wells sampled this quarter. The highest benzene
concentration (9.1 ug/1) was reported in a sample obtained from well MW-3. Consistent with
previous results, the presence of hydrocarbons in samples obtained from well MW-3 are
generally higher that the other groundwater monitoring wells.
It is also noted that MTBE was found in samples obtained from all of the monitoring wells
sampled this quarter. For example, MTBE was detected for the first time in wells MW-4
and MW-5 at respective concentrations of 60,000 ug/l and 93,000 ug/1. MTBE
concentrations reported in samples obtained from wells MW-2 and MW-3 also appear to
have increased significantly.
I,
BP plans to sample the wells during the month of December. If these data confirm the
results reported during this sampling event, BP plans to notify the current operator that a
release has occurred subsequent to BP's sale of the facility and claim indemnification for
any associated corrective action obligation.
Please give me a call if you have any questions, comments or concerns regarding this
request.
