The costs associated with this alternative are as follows:
Risk Assessment $40, 000
Annual Monitoring _4 , 000
$44 , 000
Contingency (20%) 81800
Total $52, 800
8. 0 Recommendations
Section 7 presented a summary of the potential remedial alterna-
tives for the site. These remedial actions were reviewed and
compared to determine the most feasible and cost effective
alternative.
Based on the known site characteristics, remedial action feasi-
bilities, site geology and costs, WESTON recommends in-situ
passive remediation for the site. This recommendation is based
on the following information:
o The BTX&E concentrations within the soil, as shown on
Table 1, do not appear to be extremely significant.
The risk assessment to be conducted as part of this
remedial action will addresses the possible impacts of
these compounds on the environment.
o The area is asphalt covered which reduces the potential
of infiltration and leaching of petroleum hydrocarbon
from the soils to the groundwater significantly.
o An ongoing groundwater remediation project at the site
for Occidental Chemical Corporation is inducing a
groundwater depression through the site. The potential
for groundwater migration off the site is low.
o The groundwater remediation project utilizes granularly
activated carbon to remove fumigants from the groundwa-
ter. Granularly activated carbon has proven to be
effective for treatment of petroleum hydrocarbons.
In summary, WESTON recommends that a risk assessment be conducted
for the site to determine the potential impacts of the hydrocar-
bon residues in the soil and the acceptability of passive soil
remediation. Selection of remedial alternatives should be based
on the results of risk assessment and cost effectiveness of
remedial methodologies.
19 -
