2.6 Confirmation Sampling and Analysis
At the completion of the excavation to the dimensional limits shown on
Figures 4 and 5, four pairs of soil samples will be taken laterally into the
undisturbed soil along the perimeter of the excavation. One sample of the pair
will be taken two feet below the original surface grade and the second sample will
be taken one foot above the excavation bottom. Sample pairs will be equally
spaced around the perimeter of the excavation. In addition to the sidewall
samples, two soil samples will be collected from the excavation bottom.
All samples collected will be packaged in a refrigerated cooler for shipment
to the Analytical laboratory for DBCP and EDB analysis. The lab will be certified
by the State of California and other agencies for hazardous material analyses. All
sample shipments and handling'will be documented by a chain-of-custody form.
These samples will be analyzed on an expedited turn around basis (12 hour -
maximum).
If the analysis shows the samples to contain less than 1.0 mg/kg of the
fumigants, backfill of the area will commence immediately. If concentrations over
1.0 mg/kg of DBCP are found, additional excavation will be carried out in the
direction of the sample location which exhibited the elevated compound
' concentrations.
Along with the excavation soil samples, soil samples will be collected from
the containerized soils in order to provide for adequate characterization for
disposal. One composite from each bin will be collected and submitted for
chemical analysis. The composite will be generated from three random grab
' samples collected within each bin.
7
