GEOMATREX
and EDB, and using biological treatment to remove sul£olane. The treated groundwater is then
tre-injected into deeper groundwater via 2 injection wells.
Based on information provided by the California Department of Water Resources, the average
annual precipitation (mainly rainfall) is 14.3 inches and the annual average pan evaporation is
approximately 42 inches.
3.0 INTERIM CLOSURE ACTIVITIES COMPLETED
' In 1988, Simplot retained Power Master, Inc. (PMI) to clean Tanks 127 and 128 after the tanks
' had been taken out of service and the tank contents had been removed. PMI steam cleaned the
interior walls of both tanks. The rinseate was collected in rail cars for transport to a permitted
hazardous waste disposal facility. In 1989, P14I was again retained to steam clean pipelines
' connected to Tanks 127 and 128. In 1991, Simplot retained Ecology Recovery Associates (ERA)
to remove accumulated sediments from the base of Tank 1.27. On the basis of results of a fish
bioassay, the accumulated sediments were disposed of as a non-hazardous material. Also in 1991,
Simplot began using Tank 127 and appurtenant piping for the storage of fertilizer product.
In 1994, Simplot retained MP Environmental Services, Inc. (MP) to collect wipe samples from
Tank 128. MP collected 4 samples from the inside tank bottom, 4 samples from the inside tank
' walls, and 5 samples from the appurtenant piping. In addition to the wipe samples, MP collected
a sample of water from irregular depressions in the bottom of the tank. The samples were
analyzed by Zalco Laboratories, Inc. for organochlorine pesticides using EPA Method 8080. The
' wipe samples did not contain detectable pesticide residues. The water sample contained 0.13 mg/f
of endosulfan I.
' 4.0 PARTIAL CLOSURE ACTIVITIES
This plan addresses final closure activities only. As previously discussed, the facility discontinued
treatment, disposal, or storage of hazardous wastes for longer than 90 days in 1983. For this
' reason, this closure report does not discuss partial closure activities for this facility.
5.0 WASTE INVENTORY IN STORAGE OR TREATMENT
The estimated annual quantity of waste generated by OXY under the ISD is summarized in
Table 1. As part of the interim closure activities already conducted on-site, hazardous wastes were
removed from the site. For this reason, removal of existing hazardous wastes in storage or treat-
ment are not addressed in this closure plan.
6
