' GLOSSARY
Chemicals of Concern (COCs): Specific chemicals that have been identified as
causing concern for their potential to impact the environment.
' Decaffeination: The process of removing caffeine, usually from coffee or tea beverage
products.
Feasibility Study (FS): A study performed to evaluate the feasibility of various remedial
' alternatives.
Groundwater flow and transport computer simulation: Computational methods to
predict how moving groundwater transports COCs. Also known as "modeling," a
' computer program is used to calculate the results of many physical forces acting upon
the groundwater. Modeling includes calculating and presenting the effects of such
factors as gravity, atmospheric pressure, effects of pumping wells, porosity, diffusion,
dispersion, advection and type of the soil and the natural slope of the groundwater
before pumping.
Methylene Chloride (MC): A chlorinated organic chemical often used as a solvent. MC
is also known as dichloromethane.
Record of Decision (ROD): This document states the remediation decision and the
' reasons for the decision. It identifies all remediation alternatives and verifies that the
remediation decision complies with applicable laws.
Remedial Action Plan (RAP): The final plan for the ultimate remediation (cleanup) of
' an environmental project accepted by the government agency with oversight authority.
A RAP addresses the remediation alternatives considered, the remediation alternatives
chosen, and the implementation of the chosen alternative(s). The RAP will also include
' methods to verify the adequacy and success of the chosen alternative(s).
Remedial Investigation (RI): The actions taken to evaluate and quantify the impacts
of CDCs to the environment in order to appropriately plan the mitigation (remediation) of
' those impacts.
Remediation: The cleanup or mitigation of environmental impacts.
' Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE): SVE is a process that utilizes air handling equipment to
extract vapors out of the soil, usually through wells installed in the ground. Pollutants
that readily evaporate or are already in a gaseous phase may be vacuumed out of the
soil using vapor extraction techniques.
' Trichloroethylene (TCE): A chlorinated organic chemical often used as a solvent.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): Organic (containing carbon atoms) compounds
that have relatively high vapor pressures (readily evaporate). TCE and MC are VOCs.
Water Replacement Contingency Plan: A plan to identify and replace water supplies
that are impacted by COCs.
' Zoning: The act of a community pre-determining which types of activities should be
permitted on various parcels of land. Some land may be "zoned" residential where other
' land may be set aside for industrial purposes.
