DISCUSSION OF EXAMPLES <br /> The data and discussion which follow provide results obtained <br /> with actual customer-provided contaminated water before the final <br /> system design began. <br /> Analytical measurements were made using standard methods on <br /> HPLC, GC-ECD, GC-FID, GC-PID, or GC-MS depending upon the nature <br /> of the anaysis being carried out. <br /> TRICHLOROETHYLENE <br /> In many areas, contaminated groundwater has become a serious <br /> potential health problem, as it has often been found to contain a <br /> wide range of synthetic organic compounds, such as chlorinated <br /> hydrocarbons . One of the most frequently encountered <br /> contaminants in groundwater is trichloroethylene (TCE) at <br /> concentrations between 1 and 10 mg/1. Many jurisdictions require <br /> that the concentration of TCE be reduced to less than 5 ftg/l <br /> ( 5ppb) . <br /> Figure 2 shows the cleanup profile for water contaminated with <br /> 10 mg/l (10 ppm) of TCE. From Figure 2 it can readily be seen <br /> that the target design concentration of 5 µg/l ( 5 ppb) of TCE (or <br /> )99. 95% destruction) can easily be met. In fact, since TCE is not <br /> very refractory and really rather simple to treat, there would be <br /> no difficulty in obtaining much lower concentrations. <br /> -11- <br />
