First Street
Ripon, CA 95366
Dear Mr. Smit:
As you are aware from our recent discussions, we need to install,
and have access to, two groundwater monitoring wells on the
city' s property in Ripon, California. These wells are required
by the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board
(CVRWQCB) as part of an ongoing investigation to evaluate the
extent of organic chemical migration in the aquifers in the area.
Layne-Western Co. , Inc. , has been retained by Nestle Foods to
drill these monitoring wells, and they are being provided with
engineering and hydrogeological expertise by the consulting
firm of Camp Dresser and McKee. Both of these firms carry all
appropriate insurance coverage for this type of work.
These monitoring wells will be located at 312 W. 4th Street,
Ripon, CA, on the Northeast corner of the property. They will
be drilled to depths of 120 feet and 40 feet respectively,
and will be finished off flush to the ground. Each well will
be locked to prevent unauthorized access. Water samples
collected from these wells will be analyzed by EPA methods with
specific emphasis on determination of concentration of:
trichloroethylene, 1, 1 ,1-trichloroethane, trans - 1,
2-dichloroethylene, and vinyl chloride. In addition, water
level measurements will also be taken.
Copies of all well drilling/logging data and analytical results
that are submitted to the CVRWQCB will also be forwarded to you
upon request.
Nestle Foods agrees to indemnify the City of Ripon from any
loss or expense arising out of drilling, operating, and maintain-
ing these monitoring wells on the City' s property, as contem-
plated by this letter.
Please acknowledge your approval for Layne Western/CDM to install
the above-referenced monitoring wells on your property by signing
below and returning a copy of this letter to my attention at the
above address. We are contemplating initiation of this well
drilling on or about September 24, 1987, and would appreciate it
if you would provide your approval prior to that date.
