SOIL SAMPLING AND EXCAVATION REPORT
FORMER ACETONE TANK AND PIPELINE AREA
950 INDUSTRIAL DRIVE
STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA
1.0 INTRODUCTION '
..r
This report presents the results of the soil sampling and excavation program conducted during
July and September 1995 in the former underground acetone tank and pipeline area at 950
Industrial Drive in Stockton (see Figure 1). The work was conducted in accordance with the
following workplans prepared by Cypress Environmental (Cypress) and approved by the San
Joaquin County Public Health Services Environmental Health Division (SJCPHS):
• Revised Workplan for Soil Sampling at Former Acetone Tanks Area (June 23, 1995);
.r
and
• Workplan for Soil Excavation and Additional Testing in Former Acetone Pipeline Area
(August 23, 1995).
Background information pertaining to the former tanks and piping is presented below in
Section 2. The methods and procedures used in performing the recent work are presented
in Section 3. The results and conclusions are presented in Section 4.
2.0 BACKGROUND
In 1971, one 8,000-gallon acetone product underground storage tank (UST) was installed in
an area south of the manufacturing building facility at the site (see Figure 2 inset, Area of Soil
Borings). This tank (Tank 1) was oriented in an east-west direction. Approximately 18 feet of
piping connected Tank 1 to a dispenser in a shed located north of the tank. In 1973, an 8,000-
gallon acetone waste UST was installed east of and adjacent to Tank 1. This tank (Tank 2)
was oriented in a north-south direction. There was no piping leading to or from Tank 2.
Tank 1 and the product pipeline were excavated and removed by SEMCO on July 19, 1989.
According to the Underground Tank Closure/Abandonment Inspection form filed by Charles
Hunt of the SJCPHS, the tank and piping were in good condition. According to Mr. Hunt, 8
cubic yards of soil were removed from the tank excavation, which was 12 feet by 27 feet by
12 feet in dimension. Three soil samples were collected by SEMCO on July 19, 1989, after the
tank and pipeline were removed, in accordance with State and SJCPHS guidelines. One
sample was collected at a depth of 15.5 feet at the east end of the former tank. A second
sample was collected at a depth of 15 feet at the west end of the former tank. A third sample
was collected at a depth of 2.5 feet below the former pipeline. All three samples were
analyzed for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by USEPA Method 8240. The results of the
analyses are presented in Table 1 .
CYPRESS
Universal-Rundle Corporation Pagel
r
