In its letter dated March 10, 1995, the SJCPHS requested that additional investigation be
conducted in the area of former tanks. Cypress submitted its Workplan for Soil Sampling at
Former Acetone Tanks Area (June 2, 1995) in response to the SJCPHS letter. Pursuant to
discussions during a June 14, 1995 meeting with SJCPHS, Cypress submitted a Revised
Workplan for Soil Sampling at Former Acetone Tanks Area (June 23, 1995). The revised
workplan was approved by the SJCPHS and was implemented on July 25, 1995 under
Well/Pump Permit #006321.
Based on the analytical results of the soil samples collected in July 1995 and discussions with
r Mr. Steve Sasson of SJCPHS, Cypress submitted its August 23, 1995 Workplan for Soil
Excavation and Additional Testing in Former Acetone Pipeline Area. That workplan was
approved by Mr. Sasson and was implemented during September 1995. This report presents
the findings of both the soil sampling program and excavation activities.
3.0 METHODS AND PROCEDURES
The methods and procedures used during the recent investigation and cleanup program
r conformed with the following guidelines:
• Guidelines for Work Plan and Report Submittal, SJCPHS, as revised June 1993; and
r
• Tri-Regional Board StaffRecommendations forPreliminary Evaluation and Investigation
of Underground Tank Sites, California Regional Water Quality Control Boards (North
r Coast, San Francisco Bay, and Central Valley Regions), as revised August 10, 1990
and August 30, 1991.
The recent field activities and laboratory analyses were performed in two phases. The first
phase included the drilling and sampling of four soil borings. The second phase included the
excavation, sampling, and backfilling of soil in the former acetone pipeline area. The methods
" and procedures used during these two phases are described below.
3.1 Soil Borings (Phase 1)
Before beginning any field activities, USA Underground Service Alert was notified of Cypress's
intent to drill. In addition, the area of the soil borings (and subsequent excavation)was cleared
r by an underground utilities locating service so that utilities could be avoided during the drilling
program.
r Four soil borings were drilled on July 25, 1995 in the area of the former acetone tanks and
pipeline in accordance with Cypress's June 23, 1995 Revised Workplan for Soil Sampling at
Former Acetone Tanks Area (see Figure 2). Borings CE-1 and CE-4 were drilled near the east
and west ends of the former acetone product tank (Tank 1). Boring CE-2 was drilled near the
north end of the former acetone waste tank (Tank 2). Boring CE-3 was drilled near the former
pipeline. Available information, including ground-truthing by Mr. Hewie Potts, the former plant
CYPRESS
Universal-Rundle Corporation Page 3
r
