Kleinfelder was retained to observe excavation activities,
to collect soil samples to verify removal of soil and assess excavated soil for remediation
options. The area of concern, as documented in Kleinfelder's October 27, 1993 letter, was the
northwest corner of the former fuel oil storage area. Boring B-4, was drilled to a total depth
of 31.5 feet below ground surface (BGS). Fuel oil was detected at 11,000 mg/kg. at 6 feet
BGS but nondetectable at 11 feet BGS.
Field Activities
A Kleinfelder geologist was on-site on December 30, 1993 to observe subsurface excavation.
Excavation services were performed by Ruff Stuff excavators under subcontract to O'Brien-
Krietzer. Approximately 25 yards of discolored soil were removed. The affected soil centered
around the area of boring B-4 drilled by Kleinfelder and extended approximately 2 feet around
the boring Iocation. Discolored soil was removed to a depth of approximately 11 feet.
Excavated soil was transported to an on-site soil stockpile area designated by Mr. John Tuttle
of O'Brien-Krietzer. Ms. Linda Turkatte of San Joaquin Public Health Services was present at
the end of excavation activities and during soil sampling activities.
Upon completion of excavation, Kleinfelder collected four sidewall verification samples and
one excavation bottom verification sample. The sample locations and numbers are shown on
Plate 2. Samples were recovered by scraping the desired location with the backhoe bucket and
qlq_10 3
24-220152-FOO/CR32-1 (1994) Page i of 3 January 13, 1994
Copyright 1994 Kleinfelder, Inc.
KI_EI\FELDFR 1077 Fite Circle, Sacramento, CA 95827 M16) 366-1,701
