The purpose of the '
passive soil gas sampling is to evaluate the potential for the sewer and storm water lines to
be a transport mechanism for the tetrachlroethene (PCE), trichloroethene (TCE), and cis-1,2
' dichlroethene (DCE) present in groundwater at the burn pit and sewage treatment plant
areas of the Deuel Vocational facility.
URS is proposing to install a total of 50 Gore© modules at a depth of three feet below
ground surface. The pattern of the installation, as shown on'Figure 1 of the Work Plan, is
proposed to be composed of sets of three modules Installed on top of and offset 25 feet
either side of the existing storm water/sewer lines. Each set of modules are proposed to be
located at 50-foot intervals along the storm water/sewer lines from the burn pit area and
terminating in the empty field to the north, where treated groundwater has been sprayed in
' the past. Approximately 15 of the 50 Gore© modules -are proposed to be placed in the empty
field in three rows of five modules, spaced approximately 50 feet apart. The Gore modules
are proposed to remain on site for 7 to 10 days, then removed and analyzed for volatile
organic compounds by EPA Method 8260/8270.
Regional Water Board staff concurs with the Work Plan, provided the following comments
' are addressed in a Response to Comments letter:
1.) According to the Work Plan, utility clearance will be provided by Underground Service
' Alert. Please confirm the Department of Corrections will be providing verification of
the location and depth,of the sewer and storm water lines depicted on the site maps
prior to the-start of field work.
' 2.) Please provide a summary of how the shallow borings will be abandoned after the
Gore© modules are removed.
California Environmental Protection Agency
' rglecVcled Paper
