J
10 September 2009
AGE-NC Project No. 09-1714
4.2. SOIL SAMPLE COLLECTION
Discrete soil samples will be collected using a 1.25-inch Geoprobe soil sampling assembly loaded
with four six-inch stainless steel sleeves. Upon sample retrieval, the ends of the second sleeve will
be covered with Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape. Hand augured borings will either be
sampled using a slide hammer loaded with one six-inch stainless steel sleeve or hand-packed into ►
a sleeve.
Upon retrieval, the ends of each sleeve to be preserved will be covered with Teflon sheets, capped
and sealed with tape.
Following sample collection, each preserved sample sleeve will be labeled with the boring location,
depth, time, date and sampler's initials.Appropriately sealed and labeled samples will be placed in
a chilled container under ice and transported under chain-of-custody procedure to a CDPH-certified
laboratory.Additionally, soil sample duplicates will be visually classified by an AGE staff scientist
in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS), and field screened for the
presence ofvolatile organic compounds using an organic vapor meter(OVM)equipped with a photo
ionization detector(PID). Soil sample descriptions and OVM readings will be recorded on a log for
each boring.
4.3. EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION
Prior to use,all sampling tools used for sample collection will be thoroughly rinsed with clean water
after being washed with a solution of Alconox. All probing rods will be cleaned prior to
advancement at each probe boring location.
4.4. BORING ABANDONMENT
The probe borings will be permanently sealed to prevent vertical migration of potential
contaminants. Soil borings shall be abandoned by backfilling with portland cement from the total
depth to surface grade.
Advanced GeoEnAronmental,Inc.
