Kennedy/Jenks Consultants
Section 2: Facility and Physical Setting
This section summarizes existing information on the physical setting of the facility and vicinity,
including a current description of the facility, climatic and hydrologic conditions, geology and
hydrogeology, and surrounding land usage.
2.1 Facility Description
2.1.1 Company Summary
Sutter Home was founded in 1874 in Napa Valley, and was purchased in 1947 by the Trinchero
Family. Sutter Home's Westside Lodi facility was constructed in 1998 on 297 acres owned by
Sutter Home. The winery, two process water ponds, and IAAs are located on these 297 acres.
The winery operations were expanded in 2009, with the WDRs issued to address the expanded
operations.
2.1.2 Facility Location
The facility, which consists of winery-related structures and associated LAAs, is located at
18667 Jacob Brack Road, Lodi in San Joaquin County, adjacent to Interstate Highway 5. The
facility occupies Assessor's Parcel Nos. 011-15-12, 011-15-23, 011-09-03, and 011-09-14 in
Sections 34 and 35, Township 4N, Range 5E of the Mount Diablo Base and Meridian. The
location of the facility is shown on Figure 1.
Facility features include an office, maintenance area, processing buildings, and tank farms. The
production area is mostly paved with asphalt or concrete. The existing 15.5-acre IAA is located
on the west side of the facility, with additional land on the north side of the facility recently
designated for land application activities. A stormwater retention basin is located along the
south side of the facility. The facility features are shown on Figure 2.
2.2 Facility Characteristics
2.2.1 Regional Climate
The climate in Lodi is similar to that of much of California's Central Valley region, and is
characterized by hot dry summers and cool moist winters. Rainfall data were obtained from the
Lodi Weather Station, Western Regional Climate Center for years 1893 through 2007.
Evapotranspiration (ET) data were obtained from the Lodi West Station, California Irrigation
Management Information System (CIMIS) for years 2000 through 2007.
Annual total rainfall between 1893 and 2007 averaged 17.28 inches per year. Winter (October
through February) rainfall averaged approximately 12.13 inches per year, and summer (March
through September) rainfall averaged approximately 5.15 inches per year. The record maximum
for daily rainfall total is 3.76 inches, occurring on 11 December 1906. The record annual
maximum rainfall was 35.40 inches, recorded in 1983. The 24-hour duration, 100-year storm
event would produce an estimated 2.40 inches of rain, according to San Joaquin County.
