The submittal of the report was a
requirement of Provision G.2.e of Waste Discharge Requirements (WDR) Order No. R5-2002-0034.
The report summarizes and analyzes data collected for the purpose of evaluating whether wastewater
practices at the facility have resulted in degradation of underlying groundwater. Data collected from
seven groundwater monitoring wells from March 2002 through August 2003 was evaluated. The data
does not clearly indicate that groundwater degradation has occurred. However, the data does suggest
that there are elevated levels of process wastewater constituents of concern in portions of the site. The
cause of those elevated levels is not clear, but they could be related to wastewater practices at the
facility.
Therefore, Staff is hereby requesting additional information. Please provide a response to the following
comments:
• Several of the figures in the report show a monitoring well designated as MW-1. This well is not
discussed in the report. Please describe the well and discuss its significance.
• The report provides data indicating the depth of groundwater with reference to mean sea level,
but does not indicate the approximate depth of groundwater below ground surface. Please
provide information indicating the general range of groundwater depth below ground surface
throughout the year.
• Provide a detailed discussion of historical wastewater disposal practices on the site. There
appears to be an increasing trend in NO3-N concentrations in GW-1. Please discuss.
• The report indicates that elevated concentrations of nitrate as nitrogen (NO3-N) are present in
GW-4, GW-5, and GW-7, and elevated concentrations of total dissolved solids (TDS) are present
California Environmental Protection Agency
0 Recycled Paper
The energy challenge facing California is real. Every Californian needs to take immediate action to reduce energy consumption.
For a list of simple ways you can reduce demand and cut your energy costs, see our Web-site at http9/www.swrcb.ca.gov/rwgcb5
