KennedyJenks Consultants
Section 3: Proposed Groundwater Monitoring Well
Locations and Rationale
The primary objective of the proposed groundwater monitoring wells is to characterize ambient
groundwater underlying the proposed expanded land application areas. Upgradient, infield, and
downgradient monitoring wells are proposed to monitor groundwater quality. The proposed
locations are shown on Figure 4.
3.1 Purpose of Monitoring Wells
The proposed groundwater monitoring wells will allow Sutter Home to characterize and monitor
groundwater underlying the proposed expanded land application areas. There are two principal
reasons for characterizing groundwater conditions:
• First, ambient groundwater conditions have not been fully characterized beneath the
proposed additional land application areas. Although reconnaissance groundwater samples
were collected in September 2008 for laboratory analysis, the samples were not collected
from properly installed and developed monitoring wells with well screens selected for the
site-specific soil conditions. Moreover, the reconnaissance samples were collected during a
single event, and monitoring wells will allow characterization of temporal variations.
• Second, the proposed monitoring wells will allow Sutter Home to monitor potential impacts
(if any) to groundwater as the land application system is expanded into the northern portions
of the facility.
The series of monitoring wells proposed in this Work Plan will serve both purposes identified
above.
3.2 Proposed Locations
Seven new groundwater monitoring wells are proposed for installation under this Work Plan.
These new monitoring wells, together with the existing monitoring wells, will allow Sutter Home
to characterize ambient groundwater conditions and monitor groundwater as the expanded land
application system is brought into service. The proposed and existing monitoring well locations
are shown on Figure 4. The rationale for each of the proposed monitoring wells is discussed
below:
Proposed Monitoring Well Rationale
GW-7 Monitor groundwater quality downgradient of the LAAs
GW-8 Monitor groundwater quality on the downgradient side of the new process water
ponds
GW-9 Monitor groundwater quality mid-field,to provide adequate coverage of
groundwater quality over the LAA.
GW-10 Monitor groundwater quality on the upgradient side of the new process water
ponds
GW-11 Monitor groundwater quality mid-field,to provide adequate coverage of
groundwater quality over the LAA.
GW-12 Monitor groundwater quality mid-field,to provide adequate coverage of
groundwater quality over the LAA.
GW-13 Monitor groundwater quality on the upgradient side of the LAA.
The well installation process is described in Section 4.
Monitoring Well Installation Work Plan Page 9
Sutter Home Winery, Lodi, California
g.` Wupn4obM%0866085043u rhwnCAB+ep instAI w!plNextMc
