Jeff Wong [EH ] ~
From : Jeff Wong [EH]
Sent: Tuesday, February 07, 2006 2:20 PM
To : 'Jeanne Homsey'
Subject: RE: T600087f Farmer Property.pdf
Hi Jeanne :
As discussed in our phone conversation yesterday ( Feb 6 ) , the purpose of your email
(below) was not to pause the system for rebound observation , but to swap the current
catalytic treatment unit for a more cost - effective treatment system such as carbon filter
( GAC ) . After some deliberation , as well as a recent phone conversation with Alex ( Feb 7 ) ,
EHD has come to a decision :
GWE : Submit a workplan that will increase the rate of groundwater extraction , to at least
what COS permitted you guys for ( 5 gpm according to Alex ) , or higher if need be .
Additional dedicated GW extraction wells and liquid -phase GAC should do the trick . Soil
samples during the well installation will also give us an idea of post - remediation amount
of contaminant left in the vadose zone .
SVE : Instead of switching over to vapor -phase GAC for the SVE , we continue to run the SVE
as is , until we can observe if the influent vapor concentration increases , or remains the
same , after GW extraction is bumped up ( with drop in GW table and increased vadose zone ) .
If the concentration goes up and there ' s advantage in continuing to run the SVE system , we
can then switch over to vapor -phase GAC . If not , signaling the diminishing effectiveness
of the SVE system , we can then switch off the SVE altogether . That way , we can avoid the
pitfall of paying for a vapor -phase GAC treatment unit , to say nothing of additional
permit permitting of Air Quality Control District , only to find the SVE has already
reached its limit .
So please submit a workplan for enhancing the GW extraction . I will follow this email
with an official letter (with deadlines and all , haha ) . The sooner we can get this
workplan submitted and the work implemented , the sooner we can make a determination if we
should swap out the catalytic unit , or if we should pull out the SVE altogether .
Jeff
- - - - - original Message - - - - -
From : Jeanne Homsey [mailto : jeanne . homsey@atcassociates . com)
Sent : Friday , February 03 , 2006 5 : 00 PM
To : Jeff Wong [EH]
Cc : Alex Flores
Subject : FW : T600087f Farmer Property . pdf
Hi Jeff ,
Alex and I were going through the vapor results for 610 N . Hunter . As you can see the
concentrations are fairly low . Can we get permission to pulse the system to see if
concentrations rebound? That will alow us to better assess what is the best remedial
option going forward .
Jeanne
Jeanne Homsey , PE
Branch Manager - No .
