15
There is some indication that the aereal extent of soil contamination on the eastern portion
of the parcel is limited to the north, east, and south in the former ship-building yard,
between wells MW3, MW4, and MW5 and boring B3. The analytical results from soil
samples collected during this and previous investigations (RESNA, MAY 1992) from these
wells/borings have indicated low to non-detectable levels of VOCs and typical soil metal
concentrations. However, there is less definition of the aereal extent of soil contamination
on the western portion of the parcel, due to the limited soil and ground-water sampling
activities conducted here. There is an indication that the aereal extent of soil contamination
on the western portion is limited to the north and west by wells MW1 and MW9. The
analytical results from soil samples collected during drilling of these wells have indicated
non-detectable levels of VOCs and typical soil metal concentrations.
It is important to note that the earlier soil gas survey results (LSCE, June 1993) may provide
an indication of the potential aereal limits of soil contamination (from VOCs) because those
soil gas results were verified by the current investigation's soil sampling results. The
greatest concentrations of TPH as motor oil in soil were detected where the greatest fluxes
of cycloalkanes/alkenes were present in the soil gases (B1, B2, and 134); alternatively, very
low concentrations of TPH as motor oil in soil were detected where the lowest fluxes of
cycloalkanes/alkenes were present in the soil gases (133). Additionally, xylenes were
detected in soil in the area of greatest soil gas fluxes of BTEX (133), and petroleum
hydrocarbons and naphthalene were detected in ground water in the area greatest soil gas
fluxes of cycloalkanes/alkenes and moderate fluxes of naphthalenes (134). This qualitative
relationship between soil gas fluxes and soil sampling results may be an additional indication
of the aereal limit of soil contamination from VOCs. In the eastern portion of the parcel,
the soil gas survey identified the potential aereal limit of soil contamination within the
former ship-building yard. However, the soil gas survey did not encompass the entire
western portion of the parcel, so the potential aereal limit of soil contamination, particularly
the portion of the parcel west of boring B4, is not known.
[aU
LHDORFF & SCALMANINI
C:fl N 5 I.1 L !
