Appendix
Drilling and Sampling Procedures
f
The procedures that were used for drilling the boring s and collecting soil samples are presented
' below.
r
Drilling Procedures
• Six soil borings (B-1 through B-6) we advanced and sampled using hollow-stem
auger drilling equipment.
• Augers and drilling equipment were washed with a hot water pressure washer
prior to drilling each boring.
Sampling Procedures
• The sampling equipment was washed n a detergent rinse, two clear water rinses,
and a final deionized/distilled water r Me prior to drilling. The equipment was
dry air dried or dried using paper towels.
F
• The borings were advanced to approximately 3 meters (10 feet) BGS. Discreet
soil samples were collected at approximate depths of 1.5 meters (5 feet) and at
3 meters (10 feet) BGS. Soil samples were collected using a split-spoon sampler
lined with metal sample tubes.
• Soil samples were collected in six-inch long brass sample tubes inserted inside the
' samplers. The sample tubes were eit ier pre-washed by the supplier or washed
using a bristle brush with a detergent r rise followed by two clear water rinses and
final deionized/distilled water rinse. T e sample tubes were dry before use.
• Samplers were driven using a 140 pound hammer dropping approximately
30 inches.
Following retrieval of the sampler, the first (lowest) sample tube was removed
from the sampler, the ends covered with TeflonTM film, and capped with
polyvinyl chloride end caps.
• Soil in the next sample tube (where a ailable) was used to describe the lithology
j and measure volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations. Approximately
half of the sample from the sample toe was removed and placed in a resealable
plastic bag. The plastic bag was set aside to allow VOCs, if present, to
accumulate in the headspace above the sampled soil. The headspace was then
sampled using a portable photo-ioniza ion detector (PID). The PID probes were
inserted through a hole made in the plastic bag and the highest measurement
-- encountered recorded on the boring log.
4
N;4sacDP12003iPg183e35444.3ac.doc E-1
