Drawing 1 shows a site location map. An
excavation was constructed near the former location of a diesel underground storage tank
(UST) and fuel dispensers. The former UST and dispenser locations are the suspected
source of petroleum hydrocarbons (gasoline and diesel constituents) release based on
findings from a UST removal action (Twining, 1995). Drawing 2 shows the approximate
location and limits of the excavation.
The excavation was dug both to explore the extent and to remove soil containing petroleum
product constituents (PPCs). Soil samples collected from the bottom and the walls of the
excavation were screened to assess the extent of the excavation during the field work. The
field screening consisted of observation for staining, free fluids, or unusual odor, and head
space analysis using a photoionization detector (PID).
The work plan for the project (Twining, 1995) proposed an excavation 20 feet long, 10 feet
wide and 16 feet deep. Excavation work proceeded until groundwater was encountered at
approximately 11 feet BSG. At this time, the field screening with the PID of soil samples
collected from above groundwater at 9 feet BSG indicated volatile organic compounds
(VOCs) at concentrations of 72,000 parts per million (ppm) on the south end of the
CORPORATE OFFICE: MODESTO VISALIA BAKERSFIELD
2527 Fresno Street 4230 Kiernan Ave.Suite 105 2521 E.Valley Oaks Drive 3701 Pegasus Drive,Suite 124
Fresno,CA 93721 Modesto,CA 95356 Visalia,CA 93292 Bakersfield,CA 93308
(209)268-7021 •Fax 268-7126 (209)545-1050 (209)625-1712 (805)393.5088
Chemistry Fax 268-0740 Fax 545-1147 Fax 625-1714 Fax 393-4643
