i •
Van Buskirk Park Golf Course TL No. A68101.02
March 10, 1995 Page 9
APPENDIX A
' STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES
The standard operating procedures for soil sampling, decontamination, sample handling and
chain-of-custody, laboratory quality assurance/quality controlled, using photoionization
detector (PID) and/or Drager®tubes, and for performing head space analysis are described
in this appendix. The following procedures are supervised under the direction of a
' California registered geologist.
A-1 Soil Sampling: Project activities will be scheduled with the San Joaquin County
Public Health Services Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD) prior to the
commencement of work. Underground Service Alert will be notified at least 48 hours prior
to initiation of field activities.
Excavation activities will be conducted under the direction of a Twining geologist. Soils
encountered during excavation activities will be screened in the field for unusual staining,
odors and fluids.
Soil samples will be retained using the backhoe bucket. Samples will be obtained by
pushing or driving a six-inch long stainless steel or brass sleeve into the soil with a wood
mallet.
rOnce the soil sample is contained in the sleeve, the sleeve will be sealed with Teflon® tape,
fitted with plastic caps, placed in a zip-lock plastic bag, and placed in a cooled ice chest for
subsequent transport to Twining's analytical laboratory. This sleeve will either be retained
' for laboratory analysis or stored temporarily. ,
A-2 Decontamination: Decontamination procedures will be implemented to reduce the
' potential for cross-contamination between soil borings. Before, during, and following
drilling operations, the augers and associated drilling and sampling equipment will be
thoroughly cleaned using a high pressure hot water (steam) washer. The hot water washer
has a pressure of approximately 1,200 pounds per square inch and a water temperature of
approximately 1.00 degrees Centigrade (°C). The sampler and brass sleeves will be washed
i in a Alconox® detergent solution, rinsed with clean tap water, and air-dried prior to initial
use and between each sampling event. The augers will be steam cleaned prior to the
drilling of each soil boring.
. ' Prior to construction of monitoring wells, all casings will be cleaned in the same manner as
the drilling equipment.
VAfAl
 wa
b
