Project No 034-98081
Page No 7
lJ
Mr Glen Brown, lab director of APPL, Inc , was queried regarding his interpretation of the analytical
results for the groundwater samples Mr Brown also stated that the data clearly suggest a non-gasoline
source material, although the identity of that source material could not be determined Discussions with
Wilbur-Ellis personnel regarding historical use of the former on-site UST, which has been the focus of
investigations to date, do not suggest any substance other than gasoline was stored in the UST
70 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Analysis of data presented in this report and from earlier site investigations suggest the following
conclusions may be made
• Depth to groundwater has decreased from approximately 45 feet bgs to 34 feet bgs between
March and August 1998 Historical data suggest depths to groundwater ranging to 60 feet bgs
O The soil profile beneath the subject site is dominated by lower permeability strata, such as clays
and lesser silts However, field observations of thin (<3 inches) fine to meditnn sand lenses
within clay units were made at the locations of borehole B-2 and B-3
0 Observations of groundwater recharge rates into boreholes during sampling suggest the soils
near the current groundwater surface in the vicinity of the boreholes B-2 and B-3 are more
permeable than areas around boreholes B-4 through B-7
• Chemical constituent ratios or distributions within individual samples of soil and, especially,
groundwater, are not indicative of a release of gasoline from the former on-site UST The
concentration of benzene relative to toluene, ethylbenzene, or xylenes in an individual sample is
many times to an order of magnitude greater than that expected, of cornmonly observed, for
gasoline
• Soil contamination is restricted to the 20-40 feet bgs zone, and to the 30 feet bgs zone, at
locations northwest (borehole B-2) and southeast (borehole B-3), respectively, of the former
UST However, the detection of only benzene at these locations suggests a non-gasoline source
' KRAZAN & ASSOCIATES, INC
Offices Serving the Western United States
3498081 SGS
