HLXENEO
EXECUTIVE SUMmA_RY MAR 1 8 2010
ENVIRONMENT HEALTH
OGI Environmental, LLC was recently contracted by Flying J IncpMOVAUZ
.. Preliminary Site Investigation at the Flying J Travel Plaza located at 1501 N.Jack Tone Road
in Ripon, California (Site). At the request of FJI, the investigation was conducted to evaluate
the horizontal and vertical extent of petroleum hydrocarbon impacts previously identified
* beneath the diesel dispenser located on the south side of the center RV island at the Site.
This Preliminary Investigation was limited to drilling two soil borings and collecting soil and
groundwater samples from each boring.
The following summarizes the findings of the investigation:
.r
• Subsurface Soil Conditions: Based on soil classification logs maintained during drilling,
subsurface soils consist predominantly of silty sand (Appendix A). The sand was very
fine to coarse grained and from approximately 15 to 25 feet, it was interbedded with
clayey silt lenses.
• Ground water: Ground water was encountered in each boring at a depth of
approximately 24 feet below ground surface (bgs).
r
fi • Field Observations: Soil samples were collected at 5 foot intervals and were screened
both visually and with a Photo Ionization Detector (PID). PID readings were generally
less than 1 part per million, and there was no hydrocarbon odors detected in any of the
samples screened. . 5' 3j,frPn1 t 1 n 1
• Laborato Analytical Results: A total of eight soil samples and two groundwater"
+ samples were submitted to the laboratory for analysis. Both soil and groundwater
i' samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons-gasoline range organics (TPH-
GRO) and total petroleum hydrocarbons-diesel range organics (TPH-DRO) by the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Test Method 8015; and the volatile organic
compounds benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, total xylenes (collectively BTEX) and fuel
' oxygenates, including methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) by the EPA Test Method
8260B. Laboratory analytical results indicated TPH-GRO, TPH-DRO, BTEX and fuel
oxygenates were not detected in any of the soil samples analyzed. For the two
L groundwater samples, TPH-DRO was detected in one of the samples at a concentration
of 45 micrograms per liter (}.tg/L). No other petroleum hydrocarbon constituents were
detected.
•
Hydrocarbon Impacted Soil - Based on laboratory analytical data and field observations,
the hydrocarbon impacts identified in a shallow soil sample collected from beneath the
ae.. diesel dispenser on the south end of the RV islands is isolated to a shallow pocket
located directly beneath the dispenser.
