k9 KL ElNFELDER
2. SITE SETTING
2_1 SITE LOCATION
The site is located in the city of Tracy, California, San Joaquin County and is situated west of
MacArthur Drive and south of Valpico Road. The property lies within the SE 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of
Section 4, T3S, R5E, MDB&M. According to the 1981 photorevised U.S. Geological Survey
"Tracy, California" 7.5-Minute Topographic Quadrangle Map, the property has an elevation of
approximately 115 to 120 feet above mean sea level.
2_2 CURRENT SITE USE AND VICINITY CHARACTERISTICS
The subject site is somewhat rectangular in shape and includes approximately 16.5 acres.
Currently, the eastern portion (approximately 50%) of the site is being utilized as an apricot
orchard. The north-western portion was formerly agricultural fields but has now been developed
into a water retention basin. The remaining south-western portion of the site is now partly
covered by construction fill from near-by developments and is utilized as a place for construction
debris piles. The northern boundary of the site is defined by an irrigation canal. A single
structure on the property is characterized as a large garage or barn, and is located centrally at the
northern portion of the site. A large soil pile covers a large central portion of the site west of the
orchard, extending from the southern boundary to just south of the garage building.
• In general, the area surrounding the subject site is fallow and agricultural land.
2.3 GEOLOGIC SETTING
The site lies within the Great Valley Geomorphic Province of California. The valley is
approximately 400 miles long and averages about 50 miles wide, and comprises about 20,000
square miles. The valley has been filled with a thick sequence of marine and non-marine
sediments from the late Jurassic to Holocene. The uppermost strata of the Great Valley
represents, for the most part, the alluvial, flood, and delta plains of two major rivers (Sacramento
and San Joaquin Rivers) and their tributaries.
The valley deposits are derived from the Coast Ranges to the west and the Sierra Nevada to the
east. Granitic and metamorphic rocks outcrop along the eastern and southeastern flanks of the
valley. Marine sedimentary rocks outcrop along most of the western, southwestern, southern,
and southeastern flanks; and volcanic rocks and deposits outcrop along the northeastern flanks of
the valley. The valley geomorphology includes dissected uplands, low alluvial plains and fans,
river flood plains and channels, and overflow lands and lake bottoms.
