3.6 Removal Activities
Figures 6 and 7 depict the two impacted areas requiring excavation. These areas have been
predetermined based upon the previous delineation but may be readjusted based on the results
from the hand auger sampling described above. Excavation #1, the southern excavation, is 10
feet by 50 feet with a small 10-foot by 10-foot extension on the east edge. Excavation #2, the
northern excavation, is 10 feet by 111 feet. Excavation #2 is approximately 220 feet north of
Excavation #1. Both excavations are centered upon the railroad track. The depth of all
excavations will be 4 feet bgs.
Railroad tracks are comprised of several parts: rail, joint bars, tie plates, bolts, spikes, rail ties,
and ballast. The rail is attached to each rail tie with a tie plate and spikes. The ballast is the
stone base, approximately 1 to 2 feet deep beneath the bottom of the ties. The rail tracks will be
disconnected at the joints in 10-foot sections and removed with the ties, spikes, and plates still
attached except for the rodding ties which will be removed during the lifting of the sections of
the rails. If the joints do not disconnect, a demolition saw will be utilized to cut the track. The
tracks, salvageable ties, plates, and spikes will be strapped to the excavator bucket and lifted and
placed adjacent to the neighboring tracks. Unsalvageable railroad ties, plates, and spikes will be
placed in the staging area on a 20-mil plastic liner, segregated from the other materials. The
staging area will be located across Humphreys Drive. At the end of each workday, the piles will
be covered with plastic liner, anchored with used railroad ties.
Railroad ties that are unsalvageable will be tested for pentachlorophenol and creosote by TCLP
(toxicity characteristic leaching procedure) and disposed accordingly. A core sample from the
individual ties will be removed and sent to a laboratory for analysis.
Rough&Ready Island 17 Tetra Tech,Inc.
Revised Draft Work Plan November 18, 1998
