(AA&A), on your behalf. In the report, AA&A presented
results of the third quarter 2012 sampling event on 18 September 2012 in which groundwater
was collected from monitoring wells MW-3R and MW-22, and dual-phase extraction (DPE)wells
DPE1 through DPE4 and DPE11. Petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations have increased
significantly since the second quarter 2012 sampling event in groundwater collected from
MW-3R, MW-22, and moderately in the two DPE wells sampled last quarter, DPE1 and DPE4.
Considering the increase in concentrations of contaminants of concern during the third quarter
2012, and the positive results reported after completing the initial 30-day DPE remediation event
in which AA&A estimated that approximately 2,057 pounds of total petroleum hydrocarbons as
gasoline (TPHg) had been removed, the EHD directs that the second phase of the previously
approved 30-day DPE remediation events be implemented immediately. Following this, please
collect groundwater from MW-3R, MW-22, DPE1 through DPE4 and DPE11 and analyze the
samples for TPHg; benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and total xylenes (BTEX); methyl tertiary-
butyl ether (MTBE), ethyl tertiary-butyl ether (ETBE), and tertiary-butyl alcohol (TBA). Submit
the report of findings to the EHD and include the number of pounds of TPHg recovered per day
during this second event. You may discontinue the DPE event if the mass recovery rate drops
to less than one pound per day. Discontinue the semi-annual sampling until after the data have
been presented from the second DPE event.
Although the EHD considers it premature to discuss closure consideration of this site under the
low-threat case closure policy at this time, the EHD is willing to meet and discuss any issues
with you at your convenience.
