(AA&A), on your behalf. In the report, AA&A presented
results of the first of two approved 30-day dual-phase extraction (DPE) remediation events
involving the simultaneous extraction of soil vapor and groundwater in an effort to mitigate
petroleum hydrocarbon contamination found in soil and groundwater at this site.
AA&A operated the DPE system for 606 hours, beginning on 08 February 2012 and continuing
through 13 March 2012, during which time AA&A estimated that approximately 2,057 pounds of
total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg) were removed. Based on the analytical
results from the second quarter groundwater monitoring event that demonstrated significant
concentration reduction of contaminants of concern in groundwater collected from monitoring
wells near the DPE system, namely MW-3R, and MW-21 through MW-23, AA&A has
recommended further monitoring of the site to confirm the decreasing trend of contaminant
concentration and has requested a dialogue with the EHD to discuss closure objectives for this
site.
In light of the favorable DPE results presented in the report, the EHD recommends that you
postpone the second 30-day DPE remediation event until additional analytical data are made
available and evaluated. To this end the EHD directs that half of the DPE wells, as well as
MW-3R and MW-22, be sampled during the third quarter 2012 and the groundwater samples be
analyzed for TPHg; benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and total xylenes (BTEX); methyl tertiary-
butyl ether (MTBE), ethyl tertiary-butyl ether (ETBE), and tertiary-butyl alcohol (TBA). In the
interim, do not remove the DPE system from the site because it may be necessary to restart the
system during the fourth quarter 2012, based on third quarter analytical results.
