15 <br /> There is some indication that the aereal extent of soil contamination on the eastern portion <br /> of the parcel is limited to the north, east, and south in the former stip building }a:d, <br /> between wells MW3, MW4, and MWS and boring B3. The analytical results from soil <br /> samples collected during this and previous investigations (RESNA, MAY 1992) from these <br /> wells/borings have indicated low to non-detectable levels of VOCs and typical soil metal <br /> concentrations. However, there is less definition of the cereal extent of soil contamination <br /> on the western portion of the parcel, due to the limited soil and ground-water sampling <br /> activities conducted here. There is an indication that the aereal e_tent of soil contamination <br /> on the western portion is limited to the north and west by wells MW1 and MW9. The <br /> analytical results from soil samples collected during drilling of these wells have indicated <br /> non-detectable levels of VOCs and typical soil metal concentrations <br /> It is important to note that the earlier soil gas survey results (LSC.E, June 1993) may provide <br /> an indication of the potential cereal limits of soil contamination (from VOLS) because those <br /> soil gas results were verified by the current investigation's soil sampling results. The <br /> greatest <br /> concentrations of TPH as motor oil in soil were detected where the greatest fluxes <br /> of cycloalkanes/alkenes were present in the soil gases (Bl, B2, and B4); alternatively, very <br /> low concentrations of TPH as motor oil in soil were detected where the lowest fluxes of <br /> cycloalkanes/alkenes were present in the soil gases (B3). Additionally, xylenes were <br /> detected in soil in the area of greatest soil gas fluxes of BTEX (B3), and petroleum <br /> hydrocarbons and naphthalene were detected in ground water in the area greatest soil gas <br /> fluxes of cycloalkanes/alkenes and moderate fluxes of naphthalenes (B4). This qualitative <br /> relationship between soil gas fluxes and soil sampling results may be an additional indication <br /> of the cereal limit of soil contamination from VOCs In the eastern portion of the parcel, <br /> the soil gas survey identified the potential cereal limit of soil contamination within the <br /> former ship-building yard. However, the soil gas survey did not encompass the entire <br /> western portion of the parcel,so the potential aereal limit of soil contamination, particularly <br /> the portion of the parcel west of boring B4, is not known. <br />
